Museum of the Cherokee Indian

So begins your trip through the Museum of the Cherokee Indians. Totally renovated in 1998, the new museum tells the story of the Cherokee people using high-tech wizardry along with an extensive artifact collection.

The museum is located at the intersection of Highway 441/Tsali Boulevard and Drama Road in Cherokee, North Carolina, home of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, a federally recognized tribe.

To accomplish its mission, the museum maintains a permanent exhibit, extensive artifact collection, archives, education programs, artist series, and a store. The museum also publishes the Journal of Cherokee Studies, several books, and an audiobook.

The Museum of the Cherokee Indians opened in 1948 and moved to its present facility in 1976. Its exhibit was totally renovated in 1998 when a new 12,000-square-foot exhibit was installed. The museum is a non-profit organization with 501(c)3 status, and it operates self-sufficiently based on admissions revenue and museum store sales.
